What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine first expounded by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann in 1796. Homeopathy is based on treating the individual’s mental, emotional and physical illness with highly diluted substances given in mainly tablet form, which activates the body’s natural system of healing.

The word homeopathy is derived from the Greek words homeos meaning "similar" and pathos meaning "suffering." Thus homeopathy means to "treat with a remedy that produces an effect similar to the suffering."

It works on the principle known as ‘like cures like’ or ‘the law of similars’ – that is, a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person in used to cure those same symptoms in illness. For example, Skin eruptions cause by contact with poison oak can be cured by taking a homeopathic remedy made from the poison oak plant, (Rhus Toxicodendron) i.e. similar cures similar.

Homeopathy can be used by anyone of any age for most mental, emotional and physical complaints. Homeopathy can help you get well and stay well; by working with the body, homeopathy can break patterns of illness, strengthen the immune system and reduce the incidence of recurrent health problems.
